BOW

Receptor cells in your tastes buds, send messages through sensory nerves to your brain. Your brain then tells you what flavors you are tasting. Taste buds recognize four basic kinds of tastes: sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. The salty/sweet taste buds are located near the front of your tongue; the sour taste buds line the sides of your tongue; and the bitter taste buds are found at the very back of your tongue. In addition to taste buds, your sense of smell greatly aids your ability to taste. When you eat or drink, first they smell the aroma released from the product that provides an anticipation of the flavor they are about to taste. As you chew, you force air through your nasal passages, carrying the smell of the food along with it.

Why is it important that the body have two control systems rather than one?

The body's two control systems are in place because they help the body do different things. While the nervous system reacts instantly, the endocrine system reacts slower because it uses hormones which travel through the circulatory system. The Endocrine system utilizes glands located throughout the body, which secrete hormones that regulate a variety of things such as metabolism, digestion, blood pressure and growth. While the endocrine system is not directly linked to the nervous system, the two interact in a number of ways. The nervous system acts more rapidly, as it controls the body’s response to emergencies. When this system is aroused, your heart and breathing rates increase, digestion slows or stops, the pupils dilate and you begin to sweat. The fight or flight system responds by preparing your body to either fight the danger or to run away. The hypothalamus connects these two important communication systems.

Extra Credit Blog

Topics that confused me: The cardio chapter and the minx dissections.
Topics I felt clear on: Bones and Muscles
What Lab activity was my favorite: The Heart Rate Lab because we got to run around and me and Dong watched Carol walk on the chair while we ate Doritos.
What Lab activity was my least favorite: The minx dissection. I'm squeamish and it smelled weird.

Sometimes I am unclear as to what I'm supposed to study for on tests and sometimes I'm a little confused on what to do for labs and homework.

Did you follow your diet plan for all four weeks? Why or why not? Predict your nutritional state in terms of nutrients

For the most part I was able to follow my diet plan for all four weeks. There were a few times I slipped up or became lazy, but even when I ate unhealthy foods I tried to just taste it. I have been eating low calorie diets mixed with healthy oils. I've been eating a lot of nuts and olive oil along with chicken salads. In addition to my diet, I have been running and supplementing it with P90x. I have lost a total of 4 lbs. up to this point. Another factor to my weight loss has been sleep. Before Finals, I had been sleeping around 4 hours a day and I'm sleeping between seven and eight hours a day. I really miss my carbs though :*( especially noodles and rice the staple of most Asians.
